An Arizona man has died from injuries sustained when the airbag in his 2002 Honda Civic ruptured upon deployment. His death marks the 16th fatality this year that has been linked to Honda’s faulty airbags. Amid fallout from the publicity surrounding the deaths, Honda has recalled 1.2M more vehicles featuring the faulty Takata Corp. airbags.
Until now, the 2002 Civic model never made its way onto the list of vehicles recalled since the first cases of rupturing airbags was reported back in 2014.
Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed Friday that the shrapnel-like wounds caused by the ruptured airbag were the driver’s cause of death back in June 2018.
